Childbirth can be intimidating, even for experienced moms. To ease fears and instill comfort in expectant parents, Coffey County Hospital hosts “Birth & Beyond,” a free childbirth class for expectant moms and their partners or birth coaches.
Classes take place on two Wednesday evenings—April 13 & 20—from 6-8 p.m. in the hospital conference room. On April 13, participants will learn about the labor and delivery process, inductions, Cesarean sections, and pain management. The following week, the class will focus on care for the new mother and the newborn. Participants will practice diapering and swaddling newborns.
Michelle McVey, registered nurse and obstetrics supervisor, leads the class.
“The more an expectant mom understands, the more relaxed and comfortable she will be when the time comes for the baby to arrive,” McVey explains. “During the class, we will take a tour of Coffey County Hospital, discuss pain options, address fears and concerns, review warning signs in pregnancy, and discuss the important role of the coach or partner.”
Birth & Beyond is free of charge for Coffey Health System patients. McVey recommends the class for anyone expecting between now and May. Pre-registration is required, and can be completed by calling (620) 364-2121 Ext. 4410.
Participants are encouraged to bring their support person. All other materials will be provided.
