Cast a Vote for Your Healthcare

Healthcare is a complicated issue, and this election is critical for rural Kansas hospitals. On October 27, Coffey Health System Chief Executive Officer Leonard Hernandez will help voters understand the issues that affect lives every day in Coffey County.

In this special segment of the popular Lunch & Learn series, Hernandez will translate the impact Medicaid expansion in Kansas would have on Coffey County Hospital, and look at potential effects of national healthcare issues.

A statewide study showed that Coffey County Hospital alone loses an average of $294,180 per year in Medicaid reimbursement cuts brought about through the Affordable Care Act,” explained Hernandez. “If our own legislators approve KanCare expansion, our hospital will gain an estimated $2.2 million in federal dollars over the next ten years—dollars that are currently being left on the table. Numbers like these are staggering for rural hospitals. We’ve seen the effects right here with the closure of our neighboring hospital in Independence. It is vital that our community learn the facts and join our staff in voting for healthcare in Kansas.”

Hernandez will also discuss ways to help secure a bright future for rural hospitals even after the ballots are counted on November 8. Postcards and material will be available at the Lunch & Learn for citizens to send our local representatives after the election.

The presentation is from noon to 1 p.m. in Coffey County Hospital's Allen Woods 2 Conference Room. Attendance and lunch are free; however, seating is limited. To register by phone, call  Melanie Mozey at (620) 364-2121 Ext. 4174. Online registration is also available at The Lunch & Learn series is a community service of Coffey Health System.
