Our innovative activities program encourages residents to enjoy a wide variety of fun and fulfilling activities tailored to their own needs, interests, and abilities.  While many residents enjoy crafts and group outings, others are not able to participate in these traditional activities, but at Sunset Manor nobody is left out.  Visit us and you may find three or four residents chatting while tying a fleece blanket, or down the hall another resident may benefit greatly by simply listening to staff read a book or poem.  

In addition to daily exercises and news updates, our residents enjoy sing-a-longs, Bingo, trivia contests, Bible studies, board games, and card games.

Worship services are conducted each Sunday by area churches.  Other weekly activities include story hour, manicures, coffee chat, and trips.  We are fortunate to have a handicap-equipped bus, which enables us to take group outings.  Some of these include special entertainment performances, Waverly’s annual Ohio Days celebration, site-seeing, or just downtown for coffee.  

We enjoy visits and activities with local Girl Scouts, Boys Scouts, church groups, schoolchildren, and civic groups.  We are also fortunate to have local entertainers who visit us frequently.  

These activities do much more than just help to pass the time; they stimulate the mind, enhance hand/eye coordination, and build a sense of community and belonging.

Where the Action Is - The Activity Director is responsible for keeping residents stimulated and engaged in meaningful activities based on their cognitive and physical status.  Sunset Manor has an innovative and exciting activities program designed to meet the needs each individual resident—from the more cognitively-impaired individuals to the alert and active resident.  We encourage our residents to remain out of their rooms during the day and to participate in a variety of activities.  Our activities program includes but is not limited to:

• Shopping trips,
• Meals at restaurants of the resident’s choice,
• Entertainment by a variety of performers,
• Picnics at area lakes and picnic grounds,
• Trips to casinos,
• Monthly birthday parties,
• Church services provided by community churches,
• Games and crafts, and
• One-on-one activities.

Community Involvement - Community involement is a hallmark of our activities program.  Waverly grade school and high school students participate in a variety of intergenerational activities with our residents and, whenever possible, our residents enjoy attending local sporting events, parades, and other activities.  Each year our residents host an open house for the community during the Christmas holidays and a community cookout during National Nursing Home Week in May.  Residents are also encouraged to exercise their rights by voting in local, state, and national elections either by absentee ballot or at the polling stations.
 
Resident Council - Empowerment is also an important aspect of our care.  Residents are encourage to take an active role by either communicating their concerns individually, or partipating in resident council.  In this group setting, residents meet regularly to:

• Discuss and offer suggestions about facility policies and procedures that affect resident care, treatment, and quality of life,
• Plan resident and family activities,
• Participate in educational activities,
• Support each other, or
• To address any topic the residents feel they need to discuss.

It is incumbent on management and staff to listen to problems and suggestions, research the issues, and offer a solution that is acceptable to the residents as well as the facility.
