Sunset Manor in Waverly ranked number one among 331 nursing homes in Kansas, according to the Great Plains Quality Improvement Network (2019). The ranking placed Sunset Manor in the top 10 percent of nursing homes in the United States. And when the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced its annual "star ratings," Sunset Manor earned the coveted five stars in all five categories. Our staff goes even farther to promote the well being of our residents, as shown in the CMS maintains a “composite score” system which assesses the quality of care based on 13 publicly reported quality measures—the lower the score, the better. “Sunset Manor’s composite score is under 2.0, which is well below the goal of 6.0 for Kansas nursing homes,” said Coffey Health System Chief Operating Officer James Higgins. “Director of Nursing Krista Cubit and our entire Sunset Manor team work together to exceed these national goals. But more importantly, they work every day to exceed the expectations of our residents and their families. By continually focusing on resident well-being—including reducing the use of antipsychotic medications and physical restraints—Sunset Manor is raising the bar for long-term care in eastern Kansas.”
Other measures that significantly contribute to Sunset Manor’s number one ranking include a low rate of falls resulting in injury, an emphasis on maintaining or improving daily living skills, and reduced reporting of moderate to severe pain. Sunset Manor also reported low percentages of catheter usage, urinary tract infections, incontinence, pressure ulcers, depression, and weight loss. The facility maintains high rates of vaccination for influenza and pneumonia.
